Ten Classic Sesame Street Songs to Take You Back to the 2000s

Sesame Street has been helping children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder since its premiere in 1969.

In addition to introducing audiences to a diverse and delightful cast of monsters, people, and furry and feathered friends, the show has gifted us with some of the catchiest and most recognizable tunes of the past few decades. Whether you are a member of Gen Z or a grandparent or parent to someone who is, these ten Sesame Street songs are sure to hit you with a heavy dose of nostalgia.

10. The First Time Me Eat Cookie

It’s safe to say there’s nothing cuter than baby Cookie Monster. Sing along as he reminisces on the fateful day he tried his very first cookie in this clip from 2004. Talk about a hero origin story!

9. Song About Elmo

Adam Sandler’s 2009 visit to Sesame Street was unforgettable, in no small part because he sang a hilarious song about Elmo that went on to be nominated for a 2010 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Song.

8. Time to Say Goodnight

Let the soothing voice of Andrea Bocelli send you – and Elmo – into a peaceful sleep in this lullaby from 2004. Time to catch some ZZZs!

7. I Love Words

Abby Cadabby may be just a little fairy-in-training, but she sure has a big vocabulary. This 2007 jam is a joyful celebration of the power of language. We love to hear it!

6. The Elmo Slide

Slide to the left! Now slide to the right! Get down to “The Elmo Slide,” which is as catchy today as it was when it first released in 2009.

5. I Want a Snuffleupagus for Christmas

Did you hear that, Santa? Big Bird and Anne Hathaway first sang about wanting a Snuffleupagus for Christmas in 2007, as part of the Elmo’s Christmas Countdown special. The song has gone on to be a Sesame Street holiday classic!

4. Riding My Tricycle

Take a ride around Sesame Street with Elmo on his tricycle to catch the best views. This 2004 hit is wheelie great, if we do say so ourselves.

3. A New Way to Walk ft. Destiny’s Child

Older fans might recognize the original Oinker Sister version of this Sesame Street classic from 1985, but Destiny’s Child made it their own when they stopped by Sesame Street in 2002 to sing along with Grover, Elmo, and Zoe.

2. Elmo’s Ducks

Elmo clearly had his ducks in a row while singing this song, which was nominated for a 2009 Daytime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Original Song.” This one is sure to quack you up!

1. Because We’re Friends

There is a long history of singing about friendship on Sesame Street, and there’s something extra special about hearing leading ladies Abby Cadabby, Zoe, and Rosita sing about the power of friendship in this 2007 hit. You go, girls!
