In the Sesame Street episode, Cookie Monster’s Cookie Cart, (available now on Netflix and PBSKIDS), Cookie Monster is excited to use his Cookie Cart and bake cookies for his Sesame friends!
He’s about to take orders when his mom arrives and volunteers to help. She starts doing everything for him, and Cookie Monster becomes annoyed. He doesn’t need help; he can do it himself. He becomes so frustrated he closes the Cookie Cart.
Elmo understands how Cookie feels and suggests doing a cookie breath to feel better (pretending to smell the cookie and slowly breathe out). After calming down his big feeling, Cookie Monster tells his mom he is sorry, and she also apologizes. The Cookie Cart is back in business! Cookies for everyone!
Young children experience a range of emotions during the preschool years. This includes feelings of frustration or annoyance, often when wanting to do things on their own.
Just like Cookie Monster, children are eager to be independent. Preschoolers love to say, “I can do it myself!” especially when trying new things like zipping up their jackets. Give your little one space to try a task on their own.
Providing children with independence allows them to develop an “I can do it!” attitude, which builds confidence and resilience. When grown-ups jump in too quickly, even with good intentions, it can be frustrating. Remember to praise your little ones’ attempts and problem-solve together rather than doing things for them.
