Caring for Nature: Let’s Color Together
Children can find awe, delight, joy, and pride by noticing and taking care of the nature around them.
Print this page and, together with your child, watch this video of Abby and Elmo taking care of nature by releasing their new beetle friend to its home outdoors.
Then invite your child to color in each leaf and beetle as you talk together about what each says. In which ways have you and your child helped care for nature? Which ways might your family like to try?
As children color, consider this: Even as young as three years old, children can understand and imitate simple caring actions such as making sure an insect can live outside in its habitat. They can also express real love and concern for living creatures. And by age five, they begin to understand that nature is valuable and exists beyond themselves — they can understand the perspective of other living things, show empathy, and see themselves as agents of care!
