Africa
Sesame uses the power of media, partnerships, and community engagement to prepare children for a future full of opportunity.
Sesame Workshop is working in Africa to prepare little learners across the continent for a future full of opportunity.
For over 20 year’s our local co-productions, including Takalani Sesame in South Africa, are key to our early education efforts alongside social impact initiatives encompassing health and hygiene, teacher training, learning through play, and more. Additional regional series created by Sesame Workship include Sesame Teret Teret (Ethiopia) Sesame Friends (in countries across Africa), Sesame Hadithi Njoo (Kenya) Sesame Sheeko Sheeko (Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti).
Every year we grow our work to reach children and caregivers through television, digital media, and targeted community engagement.
A partnership between Sesame Workshop and World Vision, WASH UP! reaches children across Africa with easy-to-share lessons about safe water, sanitation, and hygiene habits. And with support from the Hilton Foundation, Sesame Workshop is providing early learning and social cohesion in refugee and migrant-hosting communities in Uganda.
WASH
WASH UP! is led by furry Sesame friends who model handwashing and healthy latrine use as part of their everyday routine.
Uganda
In Uganda, Sesame piloted a program to tackle bias and prejudice and foster greater social cohesion in communities that have been transformed by displaced populations.
Teacher Training in Ghana
In a country where teachers aren’t always well-prepared to teach, Sesame is showing educators how to nurture children’s academic, social, and emotional development through interactive learning. Hosted by the colorful Muppets of Sesame Street, our video training modules impart valuable teaching techniques and classroom management strategies.
Filling a Need for Education in Ethiopia
Sesame Teret Teret, debuted in 2018 in the Amharic language, in which “teret teret” is an expression used to let people know that a story is about to be told. Now, the characters of Sesame Teret Teret bring original stories, early learning, and lessons about respect and understanding to children and families across the country.
With its endearing characters, songs, and stories, Takalani Sesame is the first classroom for South African children. Over the past 14 seasons, Takalani Sesame aims to help children develop foundational skills for school readiness and follows a rigorous development process that involves research, expert stakeholder consultation, seminars, and workshops, and is endorsed by the Department of Basic Education in South Africa.
