Teaching Wildfire Safety

Learn some simple age-appropriate answers to questions children might have about wildfire.

Talking with children about wildfires might bring up big feelings or questions. Giving honest, simple, and age-appropriate answers to questions like “What is a wildfire?” or “How can we stay safe?” can go a long way in easing their worry. Follow your child’s lead; usually their questions will let you know how much they are ready to hear.

If you are currently experiencing a wildfire near your home, you might take some extra care with your explanations. Make time to check-in with how your child is feeling and offer lots of reassurance. Check out this Family Guide for more ways to provide comfort during or after a wildfire.
