Making Connections
Watch this video and learn how Rosita and Abuela use screens as a tool for connection.
Engaging with others, staying in touch with friends and family far away, building relationships, deepening friendships — all are so important to children’s development. There are many ways to prioritize these connections, and screens can be one tool. We can use screens to share moments big and small and show we care — especially when we are far apart. Technology can help us stay in touch with the people we see every day as well as friends and family far away.
Together with children, watch this video in which Rosita has a video chat with her extended family in Mexico and shares special moments and memories with her Abuela, uncle, and cousins. This helps her stay connected to her family’s culture and language and builds her sense of belonging!
Though it can be challenging for little ones to maintain a back-and-forth conversation on a screen, and things can get a bit chaotic, even the small moments we share together using media can help us feel closer. Notice how good Rosita feels as she connects with the people she cares about, like when Abuela asks questions… and really listens to her answers. Rosita and her cousin Flor also share a special moment remembering a fun family outing, her cousin admires a drawing Rosita did of that day, and they play a game together.
Try some of these ideas to help keep young children engaged in video chats:
- each person on the call can copy each other’s funny faces
- sing a song both people already know
- tell each other one thing you loved doing today
- play a game like Freeze Dance, I Spy, or Simon Says
- prop the screen up at the table and enjoy a meal together
- share a piece of artwork they made
Watch the video a few times to learn the song. Together, sing it to someone on your next video chat:
What makes a great day even better? Spending special time together.
Together we’ll play games or watch videos… we connect and we’re mindful
While our family may be far apart, we can still talk and sing and share our art
We’re out best when we connect! Seeing you it’s just the best
We always try to, to be mindful because we’re the best when we connect!
