Bug Boogie
Sing and dance with Elmo, Abby, and some bug pals and learn the wonderful things that insects do for plants and gardens.
One way that insects help us in gardens and with plants is through pollination. Bees, butterflies, and other insects help with pollination.
Curriculum Note: Insects are everywhere, and many help our gardens grow by pollinating the plants.
Note to parents before watching:
- All insects have 3 body parts (head, thorax, abdomen) and 6 legs. Some have wings (2 or 4).
- Insects go through incomplete (3 stages) or complete (4 stages) metamorphosis. Complete metamorphosis stages include 4 different phases that look very different from the final adult insect. The stages are called the egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The stages of incomplete metamorphosis include the egg, nymph, and adult. Some nymphs are tinier versions of the adult.
- Insects like bees and butterflies pollinate flowers, trees, and plants. Without them, those plants would not be able to create seeds.
Before watching: Make a list of all the insects your child(ren) knows.
After watching lead a conversation with your child(ren) with these questions:
- What do you think insects are important?
- What are the body parts of an insect?
- How do insects move (show me) and develop?
- Where can you find insects?
