Adventure Together
Keeping a positive attitude and encouraging a spirit of adventure can make a real difference.
When adults go through transitions, their children do, too—right alongside them. It can be challenging, but if you can reframe the change as the start of a new adventure, it will help everyone approach things feeling more hopeful and excited. Modeling a positive outlook goes a long way to build confidence in the whole family.
Here are some ideas… or create your own!
What you can say:
- Wherever we go next, we’ll make it an adventure.
- We’ll find the fun together.
- There will be new people to meet and new places to explore.
- We’ll do what needs to be done, because that’s what we do.
- We’ve got this!
What you can do:
- Print out a black and white map of the new neighborhood. Invite your child to color it in. Encourage them to draw new people around the map’s edges as they meet them.Say, “This is home!”
- Tell your child to strike a pose–a superhero pose: hands on hips, head up high, feet slightly apart. If you want, add a towel or blanket to serve as the superhero cape. Then have them call out with confidence, “I AM STRONG!” “I AM BRAVE!” “I AM AN ADVENTURER!”
- Even superheroes need to take care of themselves. Make sure everyone gets breaks, including you. Eat healthy foods, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.
