Zap Game
Play this fun game to learn more about insect metamorphosis.
Watch the video Bug Boogie then do the activity below.
Zap Game is a game similar to red light/green light, but it offers a chance for children to learn more about how insects evolve. Here’s how to play:
- One person stands at the front, while everyone else is lined up side-to-side several feet back from the leader in the front.
- The leader calls out 1 of 4 stages of complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, or adult). Depending on which stage they say, the movements the other participants make vary (see below). For the 2 stages where they can move, the leader says “Zap” for participants to stop. When 1 of the players tags the leader they become the leader for the next round.
- Egg – squat down and don’t move
- Larva – crawl on all fours toward the leader
- Pupa – put hands together to the side of their head and pretend to sleep
- Adult – run or pretend to fly toward the leader
- Variations include creating a spinner with all the stages on it and having the leader call out the stage the spinner lands on, giving participants more chances to move forward. The leader could also use the terminology of a butterfly for the stages (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly).
