Trash is Treasure
Watch the Mecha Builders repurpose old materials into something new!
Curriculum: Reduce and Reuse to help keep our environment healthy.
Note to caregivers before watching:
- “Reduce, reuse, recycle” are ways we can help keep our Earth clean and healthy.
- Using fewer materials or reducing waste means choosing to color on both sides of the paper instead of taking a new piece, for example.
- The great thing about reusing materials is that it not only helps the Earth, it helps your child build creativity! Often when researchers measure levels of creativity, they show a picture of an object and see how many ways the participant can think of to use the object. So, by engaging in this activity not only will you and your child(ren) become super
heroes to the Earth, you’ll be increasing your child’s ability to think in ways that will benefit them throughout school and life.
Before watching: Pick a few items around the room and talk about their purpose. How does their shape, size, or color help the items achieve their purpose? Say to your child(ren) “Let’s watch ‘Mecha Builders’ to find out how they use some objects for a new purposes”.
After watching: lead a conversation with your child(ren) with these questions:
- What objects did the Mecha Builders use for a different purpose than what they were made for? (bottlecaps, rocks, cardboard).
- What about those objects helped them to work so that Timmy and Izzy could play checkers?
- Can we think of any new purposes or uses for the objects in this room?
