Rosita’s Family Quilt
By adding the shirt to their family quilt, Rosita learns how memories, change, and love can turn something broken into something beautiful.
When Rosita’s favorite butterfly shirt is torn, she feels heartbroken until her Mami shows her their family quilt. Each piece of the quilt holds an important story, including one from Rosita’s Abuelita that turns a “ruined” moment into a treasured memory. As Rosita decides to add her own shirt to the quilt, she learns that change can help us create something new and beautiful.
Watch this video together with children, and invite them to draw, color, or collage a square that shows a favorite memory (a place, person, or moment). Put the squares together to make a shared “quilt.” As they color, encourage children in your care to think about experiences they had about feelings that have changed: Rosita thought her shirt was ruined at first. Can you remember a time when something changed and felt bad — but later turned into something good or meaningful?
Even during tough times, reminders of love and learning can remind us all of the ways we continue to grow together.
Body Break
A quick, playful body break helps children reset by moving, stretching, and breathing to feel calmer, more focused, and ready for what’s next.
How to Help
When we have big feelings, a hint, high-five, or hands-on help can make the work easier to do — together!
