Children’s education is more than just ABCs and 123s. With today’s global landscape dominated by such pressing issues as poverty, human rights, AIDS and ethnic genocide, how can the world’s most-watched children’s television show bridge cultures while remaining socially relevant? THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SESAME STREET explores the dramas, challenges and complexities behind producing international versions of the beloved television program. The film follows productions in Bangladesh, Kosovo and South Africa and examines how producers from New York's Sesame Workshop take the iconic American television show and localize it with indigenous songs, puppets and curricula while facing cultural, political and production challenges.   Each of Sesame Workshop's international co-productions is carefully crafted to meet the specific needs of the local children. Child development experts in each country work with local directors, producers, and writers to translate the magic of Sesame Street in a way that captures the rich cultural flavors of each region. The engaging live action, animation, and colorful characters create a world of fun for young children and their families.

Sesame Tree, our most recent co-production, began broadcasting in Northern Ireland in April 2008. The new show, which introduces two characters called Potto and Hilda, promotes respect and understanding and encourages Northern Ireland's children to explore and appreciate the world around them. Sesame Tree reflects the country's blossoming mood of understanding and cooperation, and introduces viewers to the country's diversity from a child's perspective. Learn more about Sesame Tree by visiting BBC Northern Ireland Learning's website, which reflects Potto and Hilda's colorful world and offers video clips and interactive discovery games.

Here is a sampling of our other international co-productions that bring the joy of Sesame Street to children around the world.
